Sustainability has become a hot issue that is being discussed by the public. More and more people realize the importance of preserving the earth and turn to buying environmentally friendly products. In fact, more and more people are interested in sustainability, encouraging more brands or companies to create products that support this movement.
Founded in 2014, Allbirds has been known for its innovation and sustainable effort. This company also prioritizes comfort because the sneakers have the advantage where they can be washed and worn without socks. The launch of Allbirds' first sneakers is known as the Allbirds Wool Runner, which is a sneaker, made using fine New Zealand merino wool.
Nowadays, brand collaboration has become a frequent thing to do in the industry. Interestingly, two companies, Adidas and Allbirds are both trying to stake their claim in the very same product category: "sustainable" performance sneakers. One year ago, Adidas announced their project called the Futurecraft Loop, which focuses on sneakers that the brand hopes can be recycled endlessly. Meanwhile, Allbirds just launched its first running shoe, made with a material that "has the potential to suck more carbon out of the atmosphere than they produce," in April. In other words, these two companies have good reason to see each other as competitors, especially as the "sustainable" sneaker market continues to heat up. That is why this collaboration decision is so exciting to look forward to.
Adidas and start-up sustainable shoe brand Allbirds are working together to create a new product for the market, which are the world's most environmentally friendly sneakers. The effort doesn’t stop at sustainable material, but it is also traces back to the carbon emission produced from supply chain, manufacturing process and shipping. The two companies say they are exploring innovations that cover everything from manufacturing and supply chains to transportation methods that aim to eliminate carbon emissions.
In general, a pair of sneakers will produce 12.5 kg of carbon dioxide. Meanwhile, the collaboration shoes will only produce about 7.5 kg of carbon dioxide, or nearly half. The collaboration between the two companies Adidas and Allbirds aims to further reduce the 700 million metric tons of carbon dioxide that is produced by the footwear industry each year.
The release date for this collection has not been announced yet, but the two companies hope that this collaboration will encourage other companies to follow and take similar actions so that they can start small steps to make a change for a better earth.
